Note to self...
Things you didn't know you wished you knew...
September 1, 2013 at 10:46am
1. Stuff a miniature marshmallow in the bottom of a sugar cone to prevent ice cream drips. 2. Use a meat baster to “squeeze”
your pancake batter onto the hot griddle and you’ll get perfectly
shaped pancakes every time.... 3. To keep potatoes from budding, place
an apple in the bag with the potatoes. 4. To prevent eggshells from
cracking, add a pinch of salt to the water before hard-boiling. 5.
Run your hands under cold water before pressing Rice Krispies treats in
the pan and the marshmallow won’t stick to your fingers. 6. To get
the most juice out of fresh lemons, bring them to room temperature and
roll them under your palm against the kitchen counter before squeezing.
7. To easily remove burnt on food from your skillet, simply add a
drop or two of dish soap and enough water to cover bottom of pan, and
bring to a boil on the stove-top. 8. Spray your Tupperware with
nonstick cooking spray before pouring in tomato-based sauces and there
won’t be any stains. 9. When a cake recipe calls for flouring the
baking pan, use a bit of the dry cake mix instead and there won’t be
any white mess on outside of the cake. 10. If you accidentally
over-salt a dish while it’s still cooking, drop in a peeled potato and
it will absorb the excess salt for an instant “fix me up.” 11. Wrap
celery in aluminum foil when putting in the refrigerator and it will
keep for weeks. 13. Place a slice of apple in hardened brown sugar to
soften it. 14. When boiling corn on the cob, add a pinch of sugar to
help bring out the corn’s natural sweetness. 15. To determine whether
an egg is fresh, immerse it in a pan of cool, salted water. If it
sinks, it is fresh, but if it rises to the surface, throw it away.
16. Cure for headaches: Take a lime, cut it in half and rub it on your
forehead. The throbbing will go away. 17. Don’t throw out all that
leftover wine: Freeze into ice cubes for future use in casseroles and
sauces. 18. If you have a problem opening jars: Try using latex dish
washing gloves. They give a non-slip grip that makes opening jars easy.
19. Potatoes will take food stains off your fingers. Just slice and
rub raw potato on the stains and rinse with water. 20. To get rid of
itch from mosquito bites, try applying soap on the area and you will
experience instant relief. 21. Ants, ants, ants everywhere … Well,
they are said to never cross a chalk line. So get your chalk out and
draw a line on the floor or wherever ants tend to march. See for
yourself. 22. Now look what you can do with Alka-Seltzer. Clean a
toilet. Drop in two Alka-Seltzer tablets, wait twenty minutes, brush and
flush. The citric acid and effervescent action clean vitreous china.
Clean a vase. To remove a stain from the bottom of a glass vase or
cruet, fill with water and drop in two Alka-Seltzer tablets. Polish
jewelry. Drop two Alka-Seltzer tablets into a glass of water and
immerse the jewelry for two minutes. Clean a thermos bottle. Fill the
bottle with water, drop in four Alka-Seltzer tablets, and let soak for
an hour (or longer, if necessary). Unclog a drain. Clear the sink drain
by dropping three Alka-Seltzer tablets down the drain followed by a
cup of Heinz White Vinegar. Wait a few minutes, then run the hot water.
next batch...

Sponge the liquid onto the inside of window to prevent frost from forming during the winter months. 6) Rubbing Alcohol: Remove Permanent Marker Dab the surface that has the permanent marker on it with a cloth or cotton ball covered in rubbing alcohol to make it disappear quickly. 7) Chap stick: Stops Bleeding When Nicked Shaving Cut yourself shaving? Just swipe some chap stick over the cut to stop that constant bleeding. No more tissue squares! Apple Juice: Removes Dandruff Don’t ask how it works, but it does! Instead of buying a special shampoo, just wash your hair in apple juice to rid your scalp of pesky dandruff. 9) Aspirin: Get Rid of Armpit Stains on T-Shirts Grind up an aspirin tablet or two, then make a paste out of it using water, lemon or vinegar. Spread the paste on the stained area and let sit for an hour before washing. 10) Olive Oil: Make Pets’ Coat Shinier Add a bit of olive oil to your pet’s food to give them a healthier, shinier coat of fur. 11) Newspapers: Clean Windows and Mirrors Instead of using a spray and a streaky cloth, use only newspaper to clean off your mirrors and windows for a streak-free finish. 12) Baking Soda: Remove Bugs from Windshield Mix baking soda with warm water to make a paste. Spread the paste over your windshield for fifteen minutes. Then wipe or spray off with a hose. 13) Bleach: Extend Life of Flowers in Vase Add a few drops of bleach to vase water to prevent the build-up of the slime caused by bacteria. Wash before the coke dries, though. 16) Honey: Remove Blemish Overnight Have a blemish you need to get rid of by tomorrow? The wax will also rub off on the gears to protect for future use as well. 18) WD-40: Remove Crayons from Walls Use the lubricant and a cloth to remove stubborn crayon marks from the walls just by spraying the wall and wiping with a cloth. 19) Chalk: Keep Ants and Slugs Out of the House Ants and Slugs Won’t Touch Chalk. So, simply draw a line in front of your doorway where you are having problems with these pesky critters and they won’t cross it, meaning they won’t be able to get into your house. 20) Vinegar: Kills Weeds and Helps Flowers Grow Vinegar is a magic wonder when it comes to gardening. It not only kills weeds but they help flowers grow as well. Douse vinegar all around your garden to prevent weeds from popping up and to help your flowers to grow healthy and strong. 21) Mayonnaise: Remove Bumper Sticker Spread mayonnaise on the bumper sticker and let sit for at least thirty minutes. Then, rub the sticker off with a towel, leaving a clean bumper! 22) Tin Foil Ball: Replace Dryer Sheets Permanently Instead of using a dryer sheet ball up one or a few sheets of tin foil and toss it in the dryer. It removes the static electricity from your clothes and one can last up to a year. 23) Banana Peel: Polish Leather Shoes Use the inside of a banana peel to give shoes a professional and natural shine that will last for quite some time. 24) Mouthwash: Cure Athlete’s Foot Pour mouthwash on cotton balls and then swab your feet. The alcohol will disinfect the bacteria completely if you continue this for a week or so. 25) Baking Soda: Clean BBQ Grill Mix a cup of baking soda with half a cup water to make a paste. Dip your brush into the paste and scrub the grill. The caked on pieces and black residue will come off much quicker and using baking soda is much safer and cheaper than using cleaning chemicals. 26) Coffee Grounds: Fertilizer Coffee is full of nutrients and vitamins that are very beneficial to soil. That’s why some people include it in compost piles. If you want to get the most out of your coffee, pour the grounds on areas where you want more grass or flowers. 27) Olive Oil: Shaving Cream The smoothness of the oil can replace the need for shaving cream, and it also provides great moisture. 28) Dryer Sheets: Gets Rid of Static Electricity Use dryer sheets to remove static electricity from things such as clothing, TV screens or your own hair. To make the headache go away quickly, drink two cups of water very quickly. 31) Lemons: Deodorize Garbage Disposal Toss whole slices of lemon into the garbage disposal then run it. The acidity of the lemon will rid your sink of all odors and leave a fresh scent that usually lasts for a few months. 32) Alka Seltzer: Remove Burnt-On Grease and Food Stains When letting your pots and pans soak, throw in one or two Alka Seltzer tablets and the caked on residue from cooking will come off easily when you scrub/wash. 33) Apple Cider Vinegar: Relieve Diarrhea Mix two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar into eight ounces of water to soothe your stomach. Make sure the glass is clean beforehand. 35) Cheerios: Relieve Pain from Poison Ivy, Chickenpox and Sunburns Pound one to four cups of Cheerios into a powder and add to your bath to soothe your skin while you soak. The thick oil helps the fur pass through the animal’s system much quicker and easily. 38) Whipped Cream: Remove Gum from Hair There are many remedies for removing gum from hair, but this is a lesser known one. Give it a try rather than peanut butter the next time you’re in need. 39) Coke: Remove Oil Stains from the Driveway Oil stains are very difficult to remove pavement, but one method guaranteed to work is Coke. The highly acidic drink will eat away at the oil until clean. 40) Brown Sugar: Facial Scrub A scrub is good to do about once a month to remove dead skin and bacteria built up in pores and remove excess oil from the skin. Brown sugar does just as well as expensive products and will definitely result in a clearer and smoother complexion. 41) Dryer Sheet: Lint Brush You already know that dryer sheets remove lint in the dryer. Well, it can do the same thing out of the dryer, too. When you’re in a fix, use a dryer sheet. It works just as well as a lint brush, and if you like the scent, it’s an added bonus. 42) Newspaper: Deodorize food containers and Food Drawers in the Refrigerator For that stinky Tupperware or smelly refrigerator drawer that is too much to deal with, toss in a sheet of newspaper overnight before you deal with it. The paper will absorb the smell greatly reducing it or eliminating it completely. 43) Olive Oil: Unstick a Zipper The oil will help the zipper slide more easily, fixing the problem! 44) Salt: Cool Something Quickly You know that feeling when you’re having a BBQ and someone asks for a drink and you realize that no one has put them in the cooler? There’s nothing worse than a warm drink on a hot day. Chill a drink quickly, by adding salt and water to your ice. The drinks will be cold in a matter of minutes; saving your party and making you look smart all at once. 45) Scotch Tape: Prevent Wall from Chipping When Nailing The wall can leave unsightly chips when hammering in a nail. Prevent this by simply placing a piece of scotch tape over the area you’re going to nail. The wall will be held tighter, preventing chips from occurring. 46) Alka Seltzer: Soothe Insect Bites Dissolve two tablets into a glass of water. Then use a cloth or cotton ball to apply it to the affected area. The red will go down and most importantly, the itchiness will vanish usually in fifteen minutes. 47) Lemon: Whitens Whites Add about half a cup of lemon juice to your load of whites to makes them extra white. You can use lemon juice with bleach or detergent, so don’t worry about mixing chemicals with the acidic lemon. 48) Banana Peel: Whiten Teeth This may sound a little odd, but rub the inside of a banana peel on your teeth twice a day for two weeks and you will receive the same effect from a teeth-whitening kit. Plus, you’ll save yourself money and the hassle of using chemicals. 49) Hair Dryer: Free Photos Stuck on Pages If you have a photo stuck on a page that you can’t get free, try using a blow dryer on the back of the page. It will loosen the photo from the page and the adhesive holding it there. 50) Banana Peel: Heal Most Skin Problems Bananas are the magical fruit, because they heal many common problems on the skin. By rubbing the peel on your skin, you can heal bruises and cuts and eliminate rashes, itching and warts. Basically if you have a common skin problem, it can be cured by this fruit.

Prepare your background paper by distressing and inking the outer edges, randomly spritz the paper with 1 or 2 colors then add the Lrg stamp to the top left corner.
Tear and ink 2 pieces of scrap paper large enough to be photo mats and layer paper and photo onto page. Be sure the edges are adhered well or they will curl when heated.
Ink the embossing folder and lay it over the edges of the page in the blank spaces, using a drinking cup or a brayer roll the embossing folder to transfer all the ink and leave the impression of the pattern
Stamp the rest of your images overlapping onto the photo slightly, this works best if you don't use the block. Heat set the ink so it's not tacky then glitter. The dries clear by art glitter with a metal tip is great for nice thin lines.

Where did all the time go? Card instructions
Happy Birthday Tanner!
This card is a work in progress, but wanted to share the instructions just the same.
First things first, let me apologize right up front for the photography, I'm having camera and lighting issues this evening, but it is my son's 15th birthday and I really wanted to get this card posted tonight.
I used cricut cartridge "frame of mind", Heartfelt Creations "Delicate Aster" paper collection, All seasons sentiments ore-cut set HCPC 3544, Powderpuff "Midnight confession" chalking ink, white card stock, green card stock, black brads and ribbon.
this finished card is 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 you will see in a few pics that the front of the card was going to originally be a solid cord stock, however when i started browsing for something a little more detailed for the inside, I found this beautiful piece and switched it out.
first, start with a 7 1/2" x 8 1/2" piece of card stock, score down the center at 4 1/4" and across the bottom at 2" and then cut just the bottom score line as pictured.
cut away the excess as shown above, I folded that little corner up to the score line and creased it then cut along the crease. fold on score lines and enforce with bone folder.
cut your "cover" paper to measure 3 1/2" x 4 3/4" at this point you can use a little piece of temporary adhesive to hold this in place so you can finish cutting the book shape of your card. (Useful tip #1 I would recommend that if you will be adding a lot of dimension) I dry embossed my cover piece added ribbon, inked my label with word phrase and then attached it to the card base.
It's straight ...honest! from the angle I had to hold the camera to not get shadows... well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it! ok, now cut off the bottom left corner, starting at the corner of your book cover, cutting up across the spine.
repeat the process on the top right corner, cutting from the book cover corner up across the pages portion of the card.
top left corner, with a fine line marker and using a ruler draw a line from corner to corner.
use a ruler and carefully draw in the lines for the pages as shown in the picture above.
using coordinating paper and word tag, cut the paper to 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" adhere to inside right and snip away corners. add black brads to the four corners of the word tag and adhere using pop up dots.
Along just the outer edge of the pocket apply either wet glue or score tape, either will hold nicely. create your book mark, mine measures 5 1/2" x 2 1/2", I cut off the 2 top corners hole punched the top center, dry embossed to match the front cover and added a ribbon.
Lay your book mark on top of the card and decide where you want the book mark to show thru the pages with a pencil lightly mark the edges and using an exacto knife cut a slit wide enough to slide the book mark through. (useful tip #2 make sure you are using a cutting mat and not your craft mat!)
You will want to decorate the spine, and I hope you share your ideas on this, because, honestly, I'm a little stumped at this point... lol
I added little word strips to the bottom and yes... I wrote the title by hand! Never heard of right? Well I went through my 1,005 rubber stamps and just couldn't find what I wanted, considered setting it aside and going shopping also thought I should print it on card stock and then attempt to cricut cut in the exact spot I wanted it... finally my thought was, he is 15, if this ends up with all the rest of his cherished birthday cards... wadded up in a ball and shoved in a far corner of his room, well then nobody will care that I wrote it by hand. However, if he keeps it and preserves it as the heartfelt gift of love that it was intended to be, well then... he will treasure it all the more because I wrote it by hand, even if my handwriting isn't very pretty or fancy. Hope you enjoyed the card, thanks for stopping by!

not all cards are created equal!
ugh! ok first things first, I have gotten nothing done because I decided to rearrange some scrap furniture, can anyone guess how much a giant metal rack with approx 8,000 sheets of paper and card stock weigh? well, you guessed it, just more then enough to cause serious injury to my back! ok, enough about my stupidity there, I am getting enough "I told you so's" from my DH. so between being too hurt to move or to medicated to function, I cannot get a single card finished. I would love to blame it all on my back, but the truth is I started the card the night before, couldn't make it work for me and decided to sleep on it. Come morning... still nothing, so I thought I'd break my back... hhhmmm. I almost just skipped the whole Blog idea all together, but decided "what the heck?" they can't all be winners right? so I'm just gonna show you my card don't!
ok, not a terrible start, should have dry embossed the "spine" maybe inked the edges or just chosen a different paper... still, add a big fancy embellished word phrase to it and no one will notice right? huh yeah right...
the inside...sigh... I am truly a scrapbooker at heart, give me a nice big 12x12 any day, the more room the better right? no!...just, no! cute idea though isn't it? decorate it up add photos in the pockets maybe some super pretty giant tags that can double as book marks and make it a real nice gift... well, that was the plan. this is where I took some time to think on it, see everyone is getting ready for Christmas and getting that big jump on making their own cards, what a great idea! I am so jumping on that band wagon. Problem is I don't really like Christmas (ssshhh), and I don't have much scrapbook paper to choose from. (although I did get my order in for the "I want it all" Christmas card collection, it's perfect for me, those cards practically make themselves!) Anyways, this is where my card quickly took a nose dive towards the burn pile... here it is, the point of no return...

Add some coordinating paper to the inside? hmmmmm probably not a great combo huh?
Add some die cuts maybe? ugh
maybe some tags would help? but not those...
I could add pictures instead? Pics of the kids make every thing better....Riiiiight?!
ok, maybe both?
Well, this is where i gave up! It just won't work, not from lack of trying as you can see... so, with a heavy sigh and a lot of mumbling under my breath i went back to lay on my heating pad and take some more pain meds ... so, now you know. After scrapping for 10 yrs, I to can have a bad day!
...this is what i was doing when I had the bright idea of blogging my one of many scrap fiasco's
practicing with my copic's, may not be great, but it is relaxing and since she doesn't have a purpose yet, there is no stress or pressure... just coloring for the joy of it. What a nice change :)
If any of you have a "scrap don't" you would care to share, please do! I could use a good laugh about now... lol! thanks for stopping by and Happy Scrapping!!!

"Thanks for all you do" card instructions
"Thanks for all you do" Card and instructions
Approx. size 4 1/4 x 4 3/4
(A better camera is on the top of my wish list, please bear with me.)
For this card I used Totally Tan card stock by "Worldwin", Decorative Blossom corner die HCD 729 by "Heartfelt Creations", from the Sweet Surrender line I used 1 sheet from the 8x8 paper pad, 1 round doily and 1 chipboard key all by "g.c.d. studios", spun sugar and wine berry smooch spritz and Midnight Archival Dye ink pad by "Clearsnap", Holographic embossing powder and Tea Dye Distress ink by "Ranger", Heart Attack distressing tool by "We R Memory Keepers", a sentiment stamps from woodland inspirations by "Technique Tuesday" and from So Much Thanks by "Fiskars". You will also need die cutting machine, a heat tool, adhesive, brayer, piece of ribbon, button, and a safety pin charm.
From the Totally Tan card stock, line up your die as pictured and cut, be sure to use wax paper for this one. then score and fold in the center.
Using the Smooch Spritz mist the 2 colors onto the front of card, make sure the card is open and laying flat so the ink won't get on the inside, (you could lay a piece of paper over the back half if you didn't want ink on that side, I liked it on the back so this is what I did).
Stamp your sentiment on the front of card, (you can see I have the ribbon attached, but I decided to emboss so I removed the ribbon).
Using your brayer and glue pad, roll glue on to the front only of the card, the easiest way is to close the card and slide a piece of scratch paper between the 2 layers so the glue won't get on the inside of the card. once you have a good coverage of glue, cover the entire portion with embossing powder, tap off and heat emboss.
(After spraying, drying and embossing your card may be getting warped,
if so you can put it between 2 plates and run it through your die
cutting machine to flatten it back out.)
Add your embellishments to the front, be sure wrap the ribbon all the way around the fron of the card so you won't cave cut ends to hide on the inside. I also added the chipboard key after I spray and distressed it to match the card.
On the inside, I cut a piece from the 8x8 paper to fit inside leaving a border, I roughed the edges using the heart attack and inked with tea dye, I cut a doily into 1/4 and spritzed with spun sugar then stamped with sentiment and attached with adhesive.
TA-DA!!!
